An international microchip shortage continues to hammer away at the automotive industry, with manufacturers and dealerships alike feeling the pressure. The team at Wiscasset Ford has been watching the situation unfold with careful eyes because we want to keep our customers up-to-date on it. It first came into being near the end of 2020, as consumers bought massive amounts of electronic devices during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it difficult for chipmakers to keep up with the increasing demand. In turn, the automotive industry became heavily impacted at the start of this year because though plants and factories are reopening, there is a deficit of the microchips needed for powering a model’s engine and entertainment systems. This has caused multiple manufacturers, such as Ford, to put a pause on producing new vehicles and even temporarily close down plants until more chips are available.

Ford Initiative Turns 3D Waste Into Auto Parts

Going green continues to be a priority for the Blue Oval brand, according to a recent press release. It states that Ford has teamed up with renowned technology company Hewlett-Packard to recycle discarded 3D-printed parts and powders into effective injection-molded vehicle parts. While innovative all by its own, the team at Wiscasset Ford is proud to say that this is the first time such a partnership has happened within the automotive industry. The press release states that so far, the recycled components are injection-molded fuel-line clips outfitted on the sturdy Ford Super Duty® F-250. The components have increased resistance to chemicals and moisture, are 7% lighter than usual parts*, and have a reduced cost of around 10%. Engineers working for Ford are also conducting research to do the same for 10 fuel-line clips for other models.

According to the press release, HP has been furthering the field of 3D printing and its collaboration with Ford has created an efficient zero-waste process. For the Blue Oval brand, this research is helping develop all-new materials and applications for its own 3D printing usage. These include liquid vat polymerization and filaments. Ford Opens Robotics Complex In Michigan

The Ford Motor Company has long been regarded for its tendency to watch the future, which is why it is totally understandable Ford dove into the robotics industry. A press release recently announced that Ford has partnered with the exquisite brains at the University of Michigan on the state-of-the-art 13,400 sq.-ft. Ford Robotics Building, which the staff at Wiscasset Ford is really looking forward to visiting. The press release states that the four-story building cost an astonishing $75 million and was made to “emphasize how robotics can create a more equitable society.” This is done through efforts between underserved university students with an interest in robots and Ford roboticists, like autonomous vehicle researchers.

According to the press release, classrooms with remote access have already been put together within the vast Ford Robotics Building, as well as see-through glass-wall laboratories for guests to check out the different experiments being conducted. The Blue Oval brand’s roboticists are located on the complex’s fourth floor, where they work with University of Michigan researchers on initiatives involving artificial intelligence, disaster response, and even greater levels of wilderness exploration. Wiscasset Ford Celebrates Graduating Class
The Wiscasset High School faculty made a surprise visit to the homes of the graduating class of 2020, capping their high school careers on a sweet note. Wiscasset Ford was one of the donors of the gifts to these seniors that included a lawn sign with the name of the senior, a sweatshirt that read, “You don’t need 2020 vision to see our pride,” and the wolverine mascot and the message of “Class of 2020 seniors #2020Strong.” Students were handed these gifts by their teachers and senior class advisors Prema Long and Kim Anderson, who expressed the message that although the school year came to a quick end, they should keep their heads held high and anticipate what is ahead.
The celebration was enhanced by the presence of other Wiscasset High School senior class advisors, including Adrienne Frair, Hollie Paul, and Chris Hammond. Deb Pooler, the Wiscasset High School technology coordinator and student council advisor, was also present for the celebrations.
Although the COVID-19 pandemic prevented these seniors from moving forward with their schoolwork and graduation, here at Wiscasset Ford, it was vital for us to play a role in supporting our local community. Helping people in need is a mission we undertake each day, and it is something we want to put a spotlight on for the work others do. We are incredibly proud of our sister store, Portsmouth Ford, for donating a Ford F-150 pickup truck model to a community food pantry to help with collecting food. The dealership recently presented the pickup truck to Gather Food Pantry in Seacoast, NH, who is busy working hard to collect food for families in need. This gesture by our Sawyer Automotive Group colleagues is extraordinary because it will provide food security and nourishment for thousands of people during this historic period.
Gather Food Pantry has been serving Seacoast residents for more than 200 years to make the Greater Seacoast area a hunger-free community. The COVID-19 pandemic created a challenge for the food pantry, with more people needing food as more community members become unemployed.
The food pantry collects food from farms, but it takes more to gather food with greater needs. That is where Portsmouth Ford stepped up by donating the Ford F-150 pickup truck model, as it provides additional hauling and transportation for the food pantry. The truck is used to take food from 20 area farms back to the food pantry for distribution.
During the pandemic, we are all reminded about the importance of helping our neighbors and sticking together. Our sister store Portsmouth Ford showed how they have a huge heart that is filled with compassion and giving. We are especially proud of the contributions they are making to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, and also throughout the entire year with their various outreach programs.
